Justification
There was need for environmental conservation and unity of the people towards such an activity in the community and campus as well.
It is necessary for students with the passion to conserve our environment and other natural resources around such as the Mau water catchment, the Maasai Mara national reserve to realize the full utilization and exploitation of their talents, and since there was no such a club in the entire university, it was resolved that the club be established.
Establishment
Maasai Mara University Wildlife and Environmental Club (MMUWEC) is a club established under the Maasai Mara University Clubs and Societies Act.
It was officially established on the 21st October, 2013 as a successor of the former Narok University Collage Wildlife and Environmental Club (NUWEC) which was established in 2009. The club is also registered under the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK).
The core mandate of the club since its establishment has been to sensitize the members of the public on the importance of conservation to the wildlife and the environment at large.
Aims & Objectives
- • To conserve and sustain our environment for a better tomorrow.
- • To educate the entire community of the importance of conserving our environment.
- • To encourage and participate in tree planting programs as a way of restoring the overexploited forest covers, such as Maasai Mau Forest.
- • To advocate for a greener Narok, greener Kenya and a greener Africa.
- • To educate students, community and entire nation of the role played by a clean environment. Through annual seminars conferences and workshops.
- • To help people understand the relationship between the economy of the country and the environment.
Management
The club is directed and controlled by the club patron.
The clubs officials are elected by members democratically by use of a secret ballot and the candidate who gunners the simple majority is declared a winner.
The official body comprises of an executive committee (office bearers) and the committee which consists of members who are appointed to head the group units (each year representatives).
Each official is awarded a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his/her service, dedication and contribution as an official of MMUWEC for the academic year served.
Membership
The club is formed by students and the staffs of Maasai Mara University in liaison to other stakeholders who are not students or employees of the campus.
The membership registration fee is KSh 100 payed once upon registration.
Membership is renewed each and every semester with a subscription fee of KSh 50.
Each member is issued with a MMUWEC Membership card non-expiry and a Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK) Membership Card valid for one year.
Each member is awarded a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his/her commitment and contribution as a member of MMUWEC at the end of his/her fourth year.
